"Did you ever have a time in your life when it seemed like all time stood still for a while?Well, by this I mean, it stood still for you.The rest of the world seemed to be going along as usual, but your life somehow just stopped. That happened to me on June 14th, 1991.This was the day my second son was born.He came into the world in the usual way, but upon his birth, life would never be the same for me or his father and brother ever again.
You see, he was born with Downs Syndrome, which was okay.I mean, I didn’t love him any less or anything, but the grief you encounter upon such an event is tremendous.I grieved the loss of the child and family I was expecting but did not get.I grieved the fact that our families’ whole life and dreams of the future would now be eternally changed. And I grieved the fact that everything, every developmental milestone and every single act every day would be difficult for this precious new life.It was then that I vowed to do whatever I could to make life as normal as possible for our family and to help this new little child become all that he was capable of becoming. So, how is all this pertinent to infant massage you might ask?Well, here’s how...
Let’s fast forward 5 years.Gregory’s speech pathologist at the time approached me and told me that she thought a regular infant massage routine might help him out a lot, not only with his speech, but with his fine and gross motor skills as well.I was a bit skeptical, but thought, well, what have I got to lose!I agreed to try it, but had trouble finding a certified infant massage instructor in my area.I shared this information with his therapist, to which she replied, 'Why don’t you become one yourself?'The next thing I knew, I was in training and had completed my certification by 1997.Since then, it has been a true blessing. Not only did it help both ofmy children in many ways, it also became a sort of therapy session for me and grew into a parenting style that has benefited the entire family. On an even larger scale, being able to touch the lives of so many children and parents in such a powerful way has been my privilege, and is one of my contributions towards a more peaceful and loving world.
